Officer Stephanie Mohr and her partner Valk

Political Correctness Sucks

Take the case of former Prince George's County, Md., police officer Stephanie Mohr. For doing her job nearly 10 years ago, investigating a burglary in a high-crime area with the help of a K-9 police dog, Ms. Mohr is now serving a 10-year sentence in the federal penitentiary. The suspect she apprehended? The illegal alien her police dog subdued as he was starting to run. He's free, back in his native Central American homeland -- or at least we suspect so (unless he has once again illegally entered the United States). What outrageous crime did Officer Mohr commit that would bring the full weight of the United States Department of Justice down on her, take her off the streets and away from her child and family for a decade?

Did she beat up a suspect with no cause? Did she shoot a suspect for no good reason? Hurl racial epithets at a suspect because of his ethnic background? No ... not really. All she did, in responding to a call for back up to investigate a burglary, was use the police dog under her control according to standard procedure -- to bite the fleeing suspect on the leg to detain him.

All this was done in the open, with other officers present. No excessive force was used. The suspect, an illegal alien with a previous record for selling crack cocaine, was deported (as was his compatriot, also in the country unlawfully). This is where it got messy. Under pressure from the FBI, Officer Mohr was indicted -- one day before the statute of limitations was set to expire. Mohr's first trial ended in a hung jury (a single juror held out). Under continued pressure from the Civil Rights Division at Justice, Officer Mohr was indicted a second time in August 2001. The race card was played, and she was convicted and sentenced to a decade in the federal pen.

Secret

Old Age Was Secret of Modern Humans' Success

Humans began to live long and prosper only about 30,000 years ago, researchers report. Results published online this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveal a striking increase in human longevity during the Upper Paleolithic Period when the number of people surviving to old age increased four-fold.

Ringo Starr 64

When I am 64

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four

You'll be older too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday morning go for a ride,
Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me.
When I'm sixty-four

Spinach Power

Scientists turn to Popeye to save planet

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported last week that the leafy vegetable could provide the missing ingredient needed to make solar cells sufficiently cheap and efficient to provide the world with electricity. The cells work by harnessing the power of photosynthesis to covert light into electrical energy.
