The public and the academy generally dismiss surfing as either irrelevant or irresponsible, both as an activity and as an object of study. This oversimplification is contradicted by the power and ubiquity of surfing imagery, not to mention the economic force of what has become a substantial industry. Despite the generally grim image of the surfer, he (and I use "he" deliberately here) remains one of the most powerful and enduring icons of twentieth century America. The most popular television show in the world, Baywatch, is little more than an updated version of the 1960s movies Beach Blanket Bingo and Gidget. And southern California, the center of the world’s largest imaging machine and the promised land of American mythology, is virtually equated with surfing and beach lifestyle in much the same way that the cowboy is equated with the wide open spaces of the American West... .
WHY WE FIGHT, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, it is an unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a whos who of military and beltway insiders. Featuring John McCain, William Kristol, Chalmers Johnson, Gore Vidal, Richard Perle and others, WHY WE FIGHT launches a bipartisan inquiry into the workings of the military industrial complex and the rise of the American Empire. Inspired by Dwight Eisenhowers legendary farewell speech (in which he coined the phrase military industrial complex), filmmaker Jarecki (THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER) surveys the scorched landscape of a half-centurys military adventures, asking how and telling why a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war. The film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why why does America fight? What are the forces political, economic, ideological that drive us to fight against an ever-changing enemy? Frank Capra made a series of films during World War II called WHY WE FIGHT that explored Americas reasons for entering the war, Jarecki notes. Today, with our troops engaged in Iraq and elsewhere for reasons far less clear, I think its crucial to ask the questions: Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us??? .

LOS ANGELES - John From Cincinnati has caught its last wave on HBO.
The surfer drama that aired its season finale this week will not return for a second run, the premium cable channel said Tuesday.
The move represents a rare cancellation by HBO of an hourlong drama after its freshman season and a misfire as the channel tries to build its post-"The Sopranos" schedule.
"John From Cincinnati," which blended family drama with the metaphysical, earned mixed reviews and failed to spark audience interest.

Take a good look at the list below, own any stock in any of the companies listed? Patronize any of the telecommunications companies? Verizon? MCI? Think about it, these companies are all making profit from the incarceration of human beings under conditions which cause suffering to the prisoners, their families and loved ones, the guards and administrators who hold them captive, and the social fabric of our communities. Socially responsible investment demands that capital be moved elsewhere in support of the common good -the social economy, that which supports the community of all people, that which underpins the materialistic economy. Think of it as being bad-business in the long run...

Last "Black Friday," for its annual post-Thanksgiving sales blitz, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) decided to slash the price of one of the hottest electronics items for the holidays—the 42-inch flat-panel TV—to $988. The world's largest retailer had staked similarly audacious positions before, in numerous product categories, as part of its quest to remain U.S. retailing's "low-price leader." In turn, Wal-Mart's move caused a freefall in prices of flat-panel televisions at hundreds of retailers—to the glee of many people who were then able to afford their first big-screen plasma or liquid-crystal-display model.
Now, it is becoming apparent that Wal-Mart's calculated decision to break the $1,000 barrier for flat-panel TVs triggered a disastrous financial meltdown among some consumer-electronics retailers over the past four months... .
Another spike in gas prices has drivers feeling like oil companies are siphoning money out of our wallets directly into their bottom lines.
"What can we do?" a beleaguered Mike Ferris wondered as he filled up at the Esso station at Don Mills Rd. and Sheppard Ave. E. "We need gas and the oil companies know there is very little any of us can do about it."
Looking for work on the sidewalk won't be illegal in the city anymore.
The Lake Forest City Council on Tuesday repealed its solicitation ordinance, which states no one may stand on a sidewalk to solicit work. The action was part of the city's process of updating codes adopted from the county after its creation in 1991.
City officials said they have not enforced the law for several years, citing legal decisions.
Repealing the solicitation ordinance could satisfy a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana this month alleging the city infringed on day workers' free speech by enforcing the law. The council, the Sheriff's Department and Lt. Jay LeFlore, chief of police services, were named in the lawsuit... .
Commemorating the 51st Anniversary of M. King Hubbert's Seminal Speech, the Hubbert Tribute site (mkinghubbert.com) has released a 1976 video clip of Hubbert speaking about world oil depletion and explaining the concept of peak oil. Several years after his startlingly accurate prediction that the U.S. would peak in 1970 and in the context of the 1970s energy crisis, Hubbert speaks about the theoretical Hubbert curve which suggested a worldwide peak of oil extraction in 1995. In the past several years, Hubbert and his predictive model have been roundly criticized by detractors such as CERA (Cambridge Energy Research Associates) because world oil extraction did not peak in 1995 and still has yet to peak... .
